St. Maries, Idaho, is the largest city in rural Benewah County and serves as the county seat. With a population of approximately 2,448 (2018), the community thrives on a strong work ethic rooted in its two sawmills, a county hospital, the U.S. Forest Service, and local and state government.
Nestled in a picturesque timbered valley, St. Maries is surrounded by two major rivers, countless lakes, and miles of scenic mountains and forests. The city sits along the scenic St. Joe River at the southeast end of Lake Coeur d’Alene, offering residents and visitors alike unparalleled access to outdoor recreation. From hunting, fishing, and camping to snowmobiling, cycling, hiking, horseback riding, and golfing, opportunities for adventure are endless. Known as the “Hidden Jewel of the Gem State,” St. Maries offers small-town charm with big outdoor experiences.
Established in 1977, the St. Maries Fire Protection District (SMFPD) covers 82 square miles at the southern end of Lake Coeur d’Alene. The district serves communities across both Benewah and Kootenai counties, including the towns of St. Maries and Harrison. Over four decades of growth have expanded the district to three fire stations—one in Benewah County and two in Kootenai County. Centrally located within the district, St. Maries sits about 55 miles south of Coeur d’Alene and 70 miles north of Moscow, Idaho.
SMFPD is a combination department built on a strong foundation of community service. The team includes 13 volunteer firefighters, 2 full-time firefighters, 1 full-time chief, 3 fire commissioners, a full-time executive assistant, and a part-time administrative assistant. Among the volunteer force are 2 Captains and 1 Lieutenant, ensuring leadership and mentorship across the ranks. The district takes pride in its close partnership with residents and local businesses, making SMFPD not only a critical emergency service provider but also a trusted part of the community it serves.
